2019 Healthy Keiki Camp Fun!

March 23, 2019

Another year at Linapuni Elementary marks AOA's 7th annual Healthy Keiki Camp event. Despite some rain on the last weekend of spring break for the students, many children and students from the local neighborhood and beyond and families were able to enjoy the free Sodexo-sponsored meal and activities put on by the JABSOM and UH Dental Hygiene School volunteers. After a brief warm-up and delicious meal, students rotated through educational stations including topics of exercise/sun-safety, dental hygiene, lung anatomy, healthy eating habits, and immune system function.

2018 Healthy Keiki Camp Returns to Linapuni Elementary School For Third Year

April 14, 2018

Despite some heavy rain, this year's AOA students put on the 6th Annual Healthy Keiki Camp at Linapuni Elementary School located at the Towers at Kuhio Park and KPT in Kalihi for the third year in a row. Children from Fern, Kalihi Waena, and Linapuni Elementary attended the event. Almost 100% of the students at Linapuni receive free or reduced-cost lunch and a large percentage of the children in the KPT complex do not go on to higher education. The day camp was held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 and was FREE for all attendees. We provided the kids with health-related activities and promoted the importance of continued education. The activities included a "My Plate" nutrition station where the kids learned about portioning and got to enjoy some healthy snack options, a "Microbes and You" station where they learned about different types of bacteria and parasites and also learned proper hand washing techniques, a medical arts & crafts station where they made brain hats and filled body tracings with the proper organs, an oral health station with fun games about flossing and attacking plaque, a fitness station with fun games & relays and sun safety education, and a Traumatic Brain Injury station where the kids learned about the importance of wearing helmets and got to design "helmets" for eggs for an egg drop activity. All of the kids got a free healthy lunch and the camp was kicked off by a fun exercise/dance/stretching session! A big thank you to our JABSOM students, Julee Omori and her dental hygiene students, Tomoko Hotema from the Pacific Disabilities Center, and Susan Kondo and the rest of the staff at Linapuni Elementary.

2014 Events and Ceremonies Report from the National AOA Honor Society

May 16, 2014

The newest members to the Alpha Hawaii AΩA Chapter were inducted at the celebratory banquet, held at the Honolulu Country Club on Friday, May 16, 2014.

This spring, our chapter organized multiple activities for our student members. We hosted Dr. Abraham Verghese, a world renown author and physical diagnostician from Stanford University, as their AΩA visiting professor.

The day of the visit started out with a medical grand rounds presentation about the history and importance of the bedside exam. After grand rounds, the AΩA students got a valuable opportunity to round on a patient with Dr. Verghese, an experience that they say they will never forget. They students joined Dr. Verghese for a lunch time discussion and the day culminated with a presentation regarding the relationship between literature and medicine, followed by a reception. The students commented that they were moved by this experience and that Dr. Verghese had inspired them to strive to be the best physicians they could be for their patients.

Our AΩA students also did a wonderful job in putting on our 2nd annual Healthy Keiki Camp on Saturday, March 29, 2014 as their community service project this year. The day was filled with fun activities to get elementary school kids interested in health and wellness. The kids learned about their organs, how to take care of their dental health, what is in blood and snot, and about the importance of sun safety, healthy eating, and physical fitness.
